What If Someone Says You Have “No Mind”?

“Softness triumphs over hardness, feebleness over strength. What is more malleable is always superior over that which is immovable. This is the principle of controlling things by going along with them, of mastery through adaptation.” - Loa-Tzu

A short while back I addressed the concept I call, “Too Many Mind.” Today, I want to introduce you to the concept of “No Mind.”

I’ve had the experience as an athlete and coach, in my sales career and even as a speaker.

Reaction time in Olympic style Taekwondo must be lightning-quick. When your opponent attacks, there is not time to think. Thinking takes far too long. You must be able to react AS your opponent makes his move.

Likewise, when I am addressing a live audience and something goes awry, as it does from time to time. The ability to be in the moment (another way to describe mushin) is paramount. At times I don’t even use a power-point presentation during the 90 minutes I have to address the crowd. I simply allow myself to flow.

There are many ways to describe it. Often you hear people talk about being in the flow or maybe they use the term being on autopilot. Athletes know it as being “in the zone.”

I first learned about this mental state of “no mind” in my martial arts training. The Japanese refer to this as ‘mushin’, which literally translated means ‘no mind’.

This state of mind can be described as when you feel separate from the actual act. No thoughts interfere with the action because it’s unconscious and therefore uninhibited. When you reach this state, your mind can move from one activity to another like a flowing stream of water.

Understanding this state is simple, however you must practice to achieve the ability to something without conscious effort, to have your reactions become automatic.

There will be more coming on moving toward the state of ‘no mind.’

Until then, let go of your perfection and allow yourself to live in excellence.

The best is yet to come!

He Did It Again

“Divide each difficulty into as many parts as is feasible and necessary to resolve it.” - Rene Descartes

Well just when everyone thought he was on the down slope of his career at 26 years old, he stepped it up and won his 5th consecutive US Open Tennis Championship, taking his total of Grand Slam wins to 13 in 5 years.

Roger Federer is the quintessential portrait of excellence.

It says something when someone competing at the highest level doesn’t win a championship until September; some people start writing them off.

“He lost to Nadal twice, his time is over” said one pundit.

“Federer enjoyed his reign for a while, but now it’s time for him to move over.  He may win another Grand Slam or two, but he won’t be as dominant” said another.

Someone forgot to tell Roger.  He dominated the finals like it just a walk in the park.

It’s important that you understand that Roger Federer is a champion, a true champion.  He knew he was not performing at his best.  He knew he was struggling against players he was blasting off the court a year ago.

The first component of success that Roger Federer practices is simply this – Goals, he knows exactly what it is that he wants.  He is clear in his goal and that clarity brings the ability to focus without exception on what he wants.  Do you have a specific goal you’d like to achieve?

Second in this line is – Sensory Acuity or simply being aware of the results he’s getting. Paying attention to your results assists you in staying on track to your goal.

The third component in his arsenal is – Flexibility, he does not allow himself to be stuck in a situation.  “The one with the most flexibility controls the system” is a core belief worth adopting.  Federer adapts to situations in order to overcome obstacles. Again, this is a strategy that you can apply in your life.

The fourth component of success that Roger practices is something you can practice as well – Persistence, he never quits.  He works toward his goal with the understanding that by combining this with the first three he gives himself the best chance for success.

You may not or may not be a tennis player; however you may be able to learn from one of the greatest of all time.  The choice is uniquely yours.

Remember, the best is yet to come!

How to Keep Yourself Motivated

“The more laws and order are made prominent, The more thieves and robbers there will be.” - Lao-tzu

Happy Thursday! Let’s get straight to the point. Here are self-motivating reminders for you to review regularly (to listen to todays post click here).

#1 - Get Serious

Make a decision to go all the way to the top. You may have made the decision, and made up your mind to go all the way to the top, and your life has taken off. It’s the most extraordinary thing.

Get serious, don’t fool around anymore.

#2 - Identify What’s Limiting You

What’s your limiting habit? What’s the one area that’s holding you back? What’s the skill? What’s the quality? What’s the action? Ask other people. Find out what you must become good at. Sometimes it may be only one skill.

Find out what’s holding you back.   What is the critical limiting step that’s determining your success today?

#3 - Get Around the Right People

Who are the right people? Get around winners. Get around positive people. Get around people with goals and plans, people who are going somewhere with their lives and have high aspirations.

And get away from negative people. Get away from toxic people that complain and whine and moan all the time.  Life is too short.

#4 - Take Care of Your Health

Take excellent care of your physical health. That means good diet, good exercise. Everybody knows they should eat better foods, get regular exercise and especially lots of rest.

That’s very important. If you’re going to bust your butt throughout the day, get a good night’s sleep. Be fully rested, and tonight get really rested. You don’t have to watch Jay Leno…

#5 - Visualize

See yourself as the very best. Remember, all improvement in your life begins with an improvement in your internal representations. “If you shape it in your mind, you will find it in your life.”

Sound familiar? Visualize yourself; see yourself at your best continually. You are the best so therefore, see yourself as the best.

#6 - Self-Talk

Talk to yourself positively all the time. Direct your inner dialogue. And what do you say to yourself?

Say, “I’m the best.” Say it. Say I’m the best. I like myself. I can do it. I love my work. That’s how you talk to yourself. Talk to yourself the way you want to be, not the way you just happen to be at this moment. Where you’re going in the future is purely by design.

#7 - Action

Get going. Move fast. Develop a sense of urgency. A sense of urgency is the one thing that you can develop that will separate you from everyone else. Develop a bias for action. When you get a good idea, act on it NOW.

And the faster you move, the better you get. And the better you get, the more you like yourself. And the more you like yourself, the higher your self-esteem is. And the higher your self-esteem is, the greater your self-discipline.

#8 – Have FUN!

If you’re not having fun, you’re not doing it right. Opinion or not, it’s preferable to enjoy oneself than not.

Smile and have a BLAST!

This was adapted from notes in an old journal. I believe it was Larry Thompson that presented the ideas. Journaling comes in handy, don’t you agree?

Take advantage now of the time you have because you won’t get any more. You have the same 24 hours that the uber-successful have.

What’s the difference? The difference is inside the individual.  You can choose to connect with me to schedule a no obligation consultation, or you can choose not to. The choice is uniquely yours.

The best is yet to come!
