Then We’ll Fight in the Dark

“Too many people overvalue what they are not and undervalue what they are.” - Malcolm Forbes

The main theme this week both in blog posts and in the newsletter has been of the “Give your all no matter what” variety - today is no different. However this time it was inspired by a movie and not a sporting event.

Last night I was watching the movie “the 300.” I enjoy history, I enjoy the style of the movie and my friend Tim Connolly was the stunt double for the lead actor Gerard Butler, in addition to playing an extra (including the father of King Leonidis in the beginning of the movie). I always enjoy seeing a movie knowing that Tim had a role in it.

In the movie there was a scene where one of the representatives of Xerxes army was attempting to persuade a few of the Spartans via fear. He said, “Our archers will darken the sky with arrows.”

“Then we’ll fight in the dark.” was the Spartan’s response.

Ok, before a rash of emails come in informing me of the Hollywood script, the the sensationalism and the historical accuracy of the comment….I mean how could we know if a Spartan soldier actually said this, right? Yeah, I know - but that’s not my point.

It’s the mindset - “Then we’ll fight in the dark.” It’s like he was saying, “So what? Like that’s gonna make a difference it what we do?”

I love it.

What if you applied that mindset to everything you do?

What if no matter what the politicians did or the sports teams or how much the media tried to tell you how bad things are….you just kept on going for it?

What if it just didn’t matter what went on around you?

What if when things got difficult (as they sometimes will) you just “fought in the dark“?

Try it sometime. You may just surprise yourself.

The best is yet to come!

It’s a 60 Minute Game

“Ability is what you’re capable of doing. Motivation determines what you do. Attitude determines how well you do it.” - Lou Holtz

Wow! Last night I allowed myself a few minutes of television viewing pleasure - mainly US Open Tennis and College Football. It was an excellent night to check in on two of my favorite sports.

In tennis, I saw the highlights of Rafael Nadal’s match and even better was the match between a young woman from Denmark and I believe a Russian woman. These two champions left it all on the court in a 3-set match that went something like 7 - 5.  An awesome display of giving it your all.

However the game of the day was in another of my favorite sports - Football, of the college version. One of the better known rivalries in NCAA Football is an in-state match-up between Florida State University (FSU) and the University of Miami.

While these two universities were perennial front runners in the National Championship hunt for many years, both programs have been lagging the past few years (for a variety of reasons I won’t go into). That didn’t matter last night, this game could have been mistaken for the Intergalactic All Cosmos Championship.

There were numerous lead changes, big plays, penalties, mucho DRAMA! Each time it looked like one team was pulling away the other would claw back into the game. It was flippin’ incredible!

So here’s the point, last night’s game went down to the last play of the game, the final four seconds. FSU had the ball near the goal line and was unable to score. That left the Miami Hurricanes victorious.

And why did they win? In my opinion, because where many teams have given up after a few set backs - the Miami Hurricanes played all out for the entire 60 minutes of the game. Nothing against FSU, they gave it their all too. Miami just had better luk last night.

So with September underway and the end of 2009 fast approaching, are you planning on playing all out? Champions do, and if you’re reading this then my hallucination is that you’re a champion - Remember…..

Show Up, Suit Up & Step UP!
