Where do your Values come from?

“When you meet someone better than yourself, turn your thoughts to becoming his equal. When you meet someone not as good as you are, look within and examine your own self.” - Confucius

You will have gathered values all your life, starting from the day you were born, and carried some of them into adulthood.  What are they?  How did you get them?  What influence are they having on you?

Inherited values are possibly the most common.

As a child, you’ll have been influenced by what was important to your parents, siblings, extended family, teachers and group leaders.  Later on, you will have become a little more selective, adapting the values of your chosen heroes from the world of sport, fashion, film, music, politics and so on.

By the time you reached adulthood your values were already forming a major part of your adult programs.  For example, if you are always told to finish your food at meal times, you may now be eating much more than you need.  If your parents were very academic you may put a high value on acquiring formal qualifications.

Compensatory values are formed when you go to the other extreme to compensate for something which didn’t happen for you.  For example, if you had a deprived childhood you may compensate for this by overindulging your own children.

Your own judgments, or the way you perceive your own experiences will have an impact on the value you place on.  If you have ever been burgled or robbed you are likely to place a high value on security, which may or may not be appropriate in some circumstances.

On the surface these values may seem innocent enough.  However, under closer inspection it is surprising, what a major role they play in determining the way your life pants out.

When you recognize an uncomfortable tone, a feeling that all is not well, examine your values to determine whether what you are doing is violating a deeply held value.

A significant part of one on one coaching involves eliciting and creating a hierarchy of your values.  Keeping your values aligned with personal mission is critical for maintaining your motivation.

Start With Where You Are

“Everyone who got where he is had to begin where he was.” – Robert Louis Stevenson

Start with where you are, that’s always a good place.  You can’t start down a road you’re not on and sometimes where we are is not a pretty place to acknowledge.

Here’s a bit of my own story on where I started most recently. (some of us entrepreneurial types have started several times if you get my drift)

An excerpt from “Getting Out of Your Own Way!” follows:

I was back in Colorado. The only thing I really had going for me at that time was that I had returned to a place where I would be among champions, people who strive for excellence.

I’ll take a moment here to advise you to take a look at who you hang around with and the effect that they have in your life, because it is profound.

I started a process, a process that involved looking at the previous 12 years of my life. A total and complete review, and I was the reviewer and that the reviewee. The best and most difficult part of playing both sides is that I couldn’t lie to myself.  It was face the music or continue in the same way for the next 12 years.

This is the summary -

  • I looked at the businesses I was in, the companies, the opportunities, and the leadership.
  • I look at the economies during that 12 year time frame.
  • I looked at the presidential administrations.
  • I looked at the House and the Senate.
  • I looked at the countries I had worked in.
  • The cultures?  The subcultures?
  • I look at the people the customers - members of the sales team.
  • I looked at the industries
  • I looked at everything that went on in my life during those 12 years from successes and failures, marriage and divorce happiness, sadness, everything.

And then it finally came to me and just about bowled me over. The only constant in the entire 12 years that were under review was me!

Wow!  Powerful stuff, after the initial shock wore off. I got excited.

You may be asking yourself how could you get excited about that?

Here’s how - I can’t do anything about the government. I can’t do anything about the economy. I can’t do anything about the Republicans or the Democrats, the environment, wars, and taxation. I’m not in control those variables, but what I do control is one variable that’s the most important and that is me.

I can do something about me. I can change what I do. I can change how I behave. I can change what I think or focus on the got me jazzed, and now it was decision time.

My first decision was to find out what I really wanted. So I began asking myself a series of questions, and I created a vision for myself that I have not lost sight of since

Now that I truly understood that my life was totally in my control.  I adopted the philosophy:

“If you shape it in your mind, you will find it in your life.” – David Martin

The entire story is found on CD #1 of “Getting Out of Your Own Way!

Remember where you are. It’s the best place to start.

It’s OK to Get a Little Ticked Off

“We either make ourselves happy or miserable. The amount of work is the same.” - Carlos Castaneda

“So what?!” I say!  “So what?! So what?! So what?!” I say to you!

Now before you go suggesting that I may appear to harboring a bit of anger let me say this – there is nothing wrong with getting pissed off once in a while.  As a matter of fact, I recommend it.

“Why?”  Well I am glad you asked.

Because if you’re not disturbed with what’s going on in your life, and I mean seriously disturbed, you won’t begin to utilize that frustration from being disturbed to create drive and drive is your friend. ‘Nuff said on that.

Now as I write this, the Congress and the Senate of the United States of America have taken a break from investigating the “abuse” of steroids in baseball to address the impending economic crisis here in the Land of the Free, Home of the Brave.

Let’s just say that I am not exactly brimming with confidence at the prospect of the dimwits that created and exacerbated the problem are on the job to fix it.

People are beside themselves (is that possible?) with this “Corporate Bailout” thingy that’s being kicked around on Capitol Hill right now.  The Jackasses and the Heffalumps are using this as a political football to motivate their respective troops.

So what does it all mean? Not a damn thing.

Yesterday I invested nearly three hours of my day on the phone with a man that was discussing just what “the economy” is and what an individual can do to focus on his or her own “personal economy.”

What a concept?!  You have your own personal economy and by focusing on YOUR economy you can have an impact on YOUR family and YOUR life.  This enables you to advance toward your goals and dreams.

Anytime that someone says, “What about the $700 Billion blah blah blah?” you say, “So what?!”

If they bring up the Donkees vs the Dumbos…..that’s right – “So what?”

“And those dadgum illegals are crossing the border for the good jobs…..”  You guessed it – “So what?!”

Gas prices, Liberal vs Conservative, Global Warming, Hollywood, Political Pundits and the Designated Hitter……..SO WHAT?!

So if you want to begin making changes in your life and you want those changes to begin now, it’s ok to get a bit disturbed!

Until next time put everything you have into everything you do.

The best is yet to come!

Success – A Worthy Goal

“Throughout all history, the great wise men and teachers, philosophers, and prophets have disagreed with one another on many different things. It is only on this one point that they are in complete and unanimous agreement. - We become what we think about.” - Earl Nightingale

Success is a worthy goal, although striving for success does have its detractors.

There are those who would argue that those who acquire wealth do so at the expense of people who work for them.  However if you are going to achieve success in this “New Global Economy” you will do so via extraordinary effort, this is the effort that most people are unwilling to make.

You see, people seldom profit by possessing money unless it’s money that is earned.

How many times have you seen lottery winners who are bankrupt a handful of years after their financial windfall?

Or how about celebrities or heirs to fortunes, reared in an environment with no accountability, who become “victims” of alcohol or drug abuse (do the names Paris Hilton, Lindsey Lohan or Brittany Spears ring a bell?)?

The true value of wealth comes with the wisdom gained whilst acquiring it.  You will learn that to achieve wealth or greatness at any level comes from assuming great responsibility and delivering goods and/or services that have value.

You must be dedicated to your Definite Major Purpose, more so than the ‘average mindset crowd’ for they haven’t the capacity for commitment that you have.  For example, should you accumulate a fortune and then offer it to them on the condition that they do what you did, most would opt out or try to negotiate an alternative plan. The minority would accept the challenge.

It’s the people who would accept the adventure that you want on your team.  They have unlimited value, above and beyond those who long for a life filled with mediocrity.  They become indispensable because of their willingness to step up to the plate and carry the load alongside you.

Reward them.

The average minded people actually do the same in determining their worth in the market place as well.  Example:

  • Average Attitude + Average Quality = Average Results (or less than)
  • Good Attitude + Good Quality = Good Results (or less than)
  • Excellent Attitude + Excellent Quality = Results Beyond Expectations

It’s a simple formula.  Listen to me now, believe me later.

Millions, and I do mean millions, of people struggle to get by simply because the main goal they have is to get through the day.  They focus on the job they have and on trying to “make ends meet” instead of creating more value.  “That’s for other people…you know, the lucky ones.”

They are where they are, and they earn what they earn, solely because of the limitations they have set, in their own minds.

If you believe that you set your own limits then set them high.  “Reach for the stars,” as the old saying goes, “and you just may hit the moon.”

To create a life of excellence is simply a matter of choice and the choice is uniquely yours.

The best is yet to come!

Opposites Are Very Real

“In times of change, learners inherit the earth, while the learned find themselves beautifully equipped to deal with a world that no longer exists.” - Eric Hoffer

Today we live in a microwave society, at least here in the United States. Canada is not far behind and many other emerging nations (read burgeoning economies) are following along the lead set by the “Gotta have it now!” people.

Keep this in mind. There is always a consequence to whatever action you take.

The possibilities are endless and dependent on actions etc, so I am not going to make specific statements as to what will or will not happen. That’s for another email, but you can’t have something for nothing. There is an opposite action – always.

For you academic types, for every action there is equal and opposite reaction.

For the Zen philosophers it’s called the duality of nature; the Yin and the Yang.

You know positive/negative, happiness/sadness, good/bad, day time/night time, winter/summer, black/white; all the usual suspects apply when it comes to examples of opposites.

So when you make a decision in your life, it either moves you closer to your goal or it doesn’t. It’s that simple. (No Virginia, there aren’t any that do both.)

There are also consequences, both positive and negative to our decisions. These consequences, although at times barely perceptible, are very, very real.

Sometimes, because we live in the aforementioned microwave society, people tend to ignore the consequences of their decisions. Sometimes because they don’t appear until down the road, sometimes it’s because they seem small. But it will have an effect, not always pleasing.

It’s just getting what they want with little or no regard for the effects.

Not a good strategy.

Does this mean that you don’t make decisions quickly? Not at all, it means that if you make decisions quickly you’ve done so with consideration.

What does that mean? Consideration?

It simply means you’ve looked at the possible outcomes both good and bad, positive and negative, of your actions. And remember, there is always an outcome, always.

Remember, we’re coming into a time when the world is becoming a very small place. Technology allows us to do business in multiple languages simultaneously at light speed, to travel in hours to anywhere in the world, obtain information about virtually anything we require immediately.

And, the rest of the world is here to stay in this economy of the new millennium. Latin America & Asia most importantly in my opinion.

So you can choose to be all or choose to be part. You can choose to create your future in advance or you can choose to allow someone else to create it for you. You can choose to put all you have into all you do, or you can choose not to.

Each has their own set of consequences and their own set of rewards. The choice is uniquely yours.

NLP, PCS….PNF, What Does It All Mean?

“Attachment to certain beliefs can create a false illusion of what we’re truly capable of. Detachment from these same beliefs will free you to explore your true capacity.” - David Martin

As an athlete, I was introduced to a technique to increase flexibility called, Proprioceptive Neuromuscular Facilitation or PNF or Isometric Stretching.

The technique allows major increases in flexibility and can assists in recovery from injuries. You are contracting your muscles to expand their flexibility.

How it works (make sure to consult with your health professional before attempting any exercise. The following is to illustrate a concept and is not to be construed as advice):

Sitting in a hurdler’s stretch (one leg pulled back), you would lean forward trying to touch your head to your knee. After you reach your maximum stretch, back off a bit, then flex your hamstring as if you’re trying to pull your heel into the ground.

Hold it for 15 - 30 seconds. Then relax the muscle and stretch your head to your knee again. You’ll find that you can go much further this time, possibly all the way, depending on what level you were already at.

So, what does this have to do with your performance?

And, how can it assist you to move toward your goals?

Simple, contract your mind to expand your possibilities.

Get rid of the JUNK! Too much going on, too many goals, too much “stuff” to focus on, can divert your energies and actually hinder your progress. When you squeeze the non-essential clutter out of your mind, you make room to expand your mindset.

One of the concepts I recommend to my members & clients is this. After you clearly define your goals, select THREE to concentrate your energies on for the remainder of the year.

That’s it…three.

By doing this, you’ll make faster progress toward all of your goals because you’ll invoke the principle of Collateral Success. That means you’ll still achieve the other goals due to the effort you’re making to the main goals.

So, “Contract To Expand“. You’ll find results pour in faster than you can imagine.

Make your commitment now to your better future now. Call 800.748.6838 or email me directly at info@empowermax.com

Success is achieved by those who prepare in advance.
